I would hold off on the movie until you've read the book- the movie isn't completely horrendous, but its focus is solely on the psycho part. And if you like American Psycho, try Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities - also a pretty bad movie, but the two books together kind of plumb the depths of the 80s. A novel and a movie always differ, they're very different media. A book usually doesn't "fit" into a movie, for example. Another example is that a novel describes and a film shows things. A big difference in my opinion is that a book lends itself. Just finished reading American Psycho then watched the film. Both were excellent. However I feel that in the last few years, via YouTube clips and GIFS, the Internet has propagated this idea that Patrick Bateman is some sort of hilarious, anti-conformity, anti-hero.
